Since Cannabis got legalized in Canada, there’s been incredible curiosity regarding its therapeutic benefits and effects on the body. However, while most individuals are familiar with Cannabidiol (CBD), very little is known about Cannabinol (CBN), Cannabigerol (CBG), and Cannabichromene (CBC). Therefore to shine some light on these four Cannabinoid strains, The Leaf Collection has outlined the significant differences and similarities. Read on to learn more.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a popular cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. Unlike its counterpart, THC, CBD does not produce the “high” commonly associated with other cannabinoids. CBD is the most abundant cannabinoid in hemp and the most well-researched cannabinoid to date. The growing interest and research surrounding CBD make it a valuable benchmark when exploring other lesser-known cannabinoids.

Cannabigerol (CBG)

Cannabigerol (CBG) and CBD share similarities in terms of their effects on the body. CBG comes from the precursor cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), considered the “mother of all cannabinoids.” THC, CBG, and CBD all start as CBGA and later get transformed through light and heat exposure. CBD is known for its non-psychotropic effects, and CBG also lacks the psychotropic effects of THC. CBD and CBG are known to reduce inflammation, act as an antibacterial shield, to protect neurons from damage. However, there are differences between the two, such as their concentration levels and mechanisms of action. CBG is found in lower amounts in cannabis plants and has a stronger affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Cannabinol (CBN)

Cannabinol (CBN) is another cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. While its effects are similar to CBD, its origin is different, as it’s the result of the oxidation of THC. CBN gets formed from its acidic precursor, cannabinolic acid, through heat or exposure to time and light. CBN and CBD both have antibacterial, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, while CBD is non-psychoactive, CBN may have mild psychoactive effects.

Cannabichromene (CBC)

Cannabichromene (CBC) is a less-known cannabinoid formed through the breakdown of cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) from exposure to heat or ultraviolet light. In most strains of Cannabis, CBC is the third-most abundant cannabinoid, found in large amounts in landrace strains in India. Like CBD, CBC does not produce an intoxicating effect and has a weak affinity for cannabinoid receptors such as CB1 and CB2. CBC exerts its effects through other receptors and pathways.
